Watching the kettle boil!

Finding a little time for BNI is a challenge for many BNI members. I can understand that because I can remember a time when, as I was that busy, it was difficult to find even a couple of minutes to go to the loo. That may sound crazy, but it’s true. However, I soon sorted out how to prioritise and, in fact, now help a lot of my clients use their time much more effectively.

The thing is, as I’ve written before, just a few minutes a day spent on BNI activities would make a big difference to your rewards as a member. So how about this for an idea?

If you are anything like me, a couple of times a day you make myself a cup of coffee (I have tea in the afternoon) and, again if you are like me, while the kettle is boiling you sort out your cup, put in some milk and a spoon of coffee (and maybe sugar). Then you watch the kettle boil; it’s a couple of minutes when nothing much happens. Your world is in a sort of limbo.

But actually it’s the perfect time for a little BNI activity. You have time to send a few texts, maybe an email or two, even to make a quick phone call. The great thing about this idea is that you don’t need any more time to get this stuff done.
Just imagine if all you managed to do was to send was a couple of texts a day but that you did it every day. That would be 10 texts a week and 40 texts over the course of a month. Now that has to be worthwhile!

Sharpen your Axe

I was taking a tree root out of my garden recently; you can certainly wear yourself out swinging an axe. And what I discovered is that the job is so much easier and more effectively done if you use a sharp axe. Strangely, I would never think to prepare food in my kitchen without first sharpening my kitchen knives.

So what’s my tree root cutting skills (or lack of), and my cooking skills, got to do with you and your BNI chapter? Well, as it turns out, a fair amount. You see, I purchased my axe some years ago and have been using it, off and on, ever since. I swing it at mostly tree roots, now working up a good healthy sweat, as I’m having to use more and more effort, all because my axe was blunt.

And, I’ve noticed that, this is a lot like many BNI members. They attended the Member Success workshop as a new member and then maybe another skills workshop or two and that is it, they never go again. Done that!

But, like my axe, our business skills and our networking skills get ‘blunt’. We forget some of the things we know; while others we just stop doing and we don’t actually even know why.

So if you haven’t attended a workshop recently, say in the past three months, certainly if not in the past six months, I highly recommend that you attended a workshop soon. Doesn’t matter how many times you have completed the workshop before, just go along and sharpen your skills.

Because if you hone your skills, your results will improve, seemingly, without any extra effort.

Fun Free Tombola

I attended a meeting last week where a member organised a Fun Free Tombola. Laid out on a table were all of the prizes, nicely wrapped, with a ticket number taped on top. There were enough prizes for every member, plus five extras.

Then as each member (and visitor) signed in, they drew a ticket from a hat, and claimed their prize. Now, as I say it was a fun tombola, so half the prizes were a Mars Bar, while the other half were more valuable. There were things like: high-lighter pens, Thank You cards, CDs, books, a dinner for two and vouchers for the member’s services.

It really was good fun and as usual got me thinking.

How about this for an idea?

A Free Tombola for (eligible) visitor bringing. You could run the tombola in exactly the same way, and depending on your chapter’s funds, you could run it for just a month, or two months, or even three months.

Let’s assume your chapter has the funds to run the tombola for a month. From your Palms Report find out what your average monthly visitors are. Then add, say, 20% to the number and that’s how many prizes you will need. Now you need to buy the prizes and/or get them donated. Remember half will be just Mars Bars (or similar) and you need a few really good prizes.

Wrap and number them all and put the counterpart number into a hat. Now you are ready to play!

Each week anyone who brings a visitor picks a tombola ticket and collects their prizes from the prize table. And of course they get a ticket for each visitor they bring.

Of course the better your ‘Star’ prize is the more incentive there will be for members to bring visitors. An iPad maybe? With this in mind a shorter time with better prizes may work best.

I think this could be great fun (who doesn’t like a draw?) and help grow your chapter.

If you do try this please let me know how you get on.

NOTE: If you do run a tombola please email me first for one last piece of advice.

A Blank Page!

Image this if you will. You are looking through one of those A5 Local Magazines. It’s full of articles, editorials, photos, adverts, it’s got a ‘What’s On’ page and of course crosswords and puzzles. Then you come across a blank page.

What do you think? Has the printer made a mistake? Is there an article missing? Did an advertiser forget to submit their copy for their advert?

Of course this wouldn’t happen, especially an advertiser who had paid for space, not bothering to supply copy for an advert. But it does happen in your chapter. Don’t believe me? Well isn’t it just the same as a member being absent without a Sub?

They have paid to advertise their business every week but any time they are absent (without a Sub) they are in effect running a ‘blank page’. In fact it’s far worse than just not running an advert because being absent also hurts their credibility. It limits their ability to find referrals for other members. Plus a whole host of other important things.

It is far more damaging to run a ‘blank page’ at your chapter than it is in a printed magazine. Yet many members do it. I also know that those same people wouldn’t dream of running a blank page, they had paid for, in a magazine.

So, if you ever think about being absent from your meeting consider these two things: 1) would you run a blank page in a magazine? 2) the damage it will do to your reputation?

And please don’t be fooled into thinking that you being absent will not damage your reputation - because it will!

No one will come up to you and say, ‘being absent last week damaged your credibility’ but someone in your chapter will think twice about giving you a referral they might have done

It’s just that you will never know.

Across the dance floor!

Don't know about you, but when I was in my early twenties it took a great deal of courage to cross a dance floor and ask a beautiful girl if she would like a dance.

Again, if you were anything like me the answer was a curt "No thanks", and you had to make the return trip to your starting point - knowing that everyone watching knew exactly what had just happened. I would imagine those gifted at asking a girl to dance feeling pity for me, while those more timid than I just thanked their lucky stars that it wasn't them doing the walk of shame and took another sip of their beer.

But if not that night, another night, I would try again and I kept on trying, as I expect you did, until a lovely girl said yes.

Well that was a long time ago, but the experience is still very valid today.

You see when I ask members if they have tried inviting visitors by letter, or postcard, by email, by text, or even asking people they know if they could suggest someone, I more often than not get the reply, "Oh. I tried that once and it didn't work".

Can you imagine the number of unmarried men there would be around if they had used this same principle when asking a girl for a dance, or even a date? She said 'No'. I'm not trying that again!

So, why is it that those very same people only try inviting a visitor once?

I guess it comes down to a combination of fear, ambition, priorities and even credibility.

There was a lot of fear in asking the girl of your dreams for a date. However, for most men to have a beautiful loving girlfriend was something they dreamed about. And other than football on Saturday, it was their only priority. There was of course credibility at stake, as no-one wanted to be the only person without a girlfriend.

So, if you find it hard to get visitors along to your chapter, cast your mind back to those days on the dance floor; for some of you it may have been just last week!

And instead of trying to find a visitor using one particular method just the once, keep trying until you succeed. After all, you know that if you keep trying you will succeed.

And ladies, this doesn't let you off the hook, as I'm sure you have your own example!

Good Luck.

Welcome to Bristol Cook

On the 20th August (I went on holiday the next day) I visited Bristol Cook, a lunchtime chapter, pretty much in the centre of Bristol.

The chapter launched in January and is already thirty strong and it's easy to see why. Led by Sarah Owen, a good friend of mine, and Area Director, the chapter has a real sense of togetherness and everyone seems to like each other. I love their 'Good Egg of the Month' award.

But what I really like is their 'Referral to look for' sheet. The front is fairly standard, other than it is colour coded into Power Groups; what a great idea. However, it's the reverse of the sheet that is really impressive. It's all there.

Leadership Team, 10 Minute Speaker, 60 Second guide and the month's Network Leaders. But it goes much further than that. It then covers the Top 5 Business Givers, the Top 5 Referral Givers and the Top 5 Visitor Inviters. Each has a total: 198 visitors this year. No wonder Bristol Cook is already a 30-strong chapter.

However, once again, there is more. Bar Charts for the Business Givers, Referral Givers and Visitor Inviters. The visuals are so much better than just plain figures.

So, why do I think this is so good? Well, it's simple. The members of Bristol Cook have been accountable from 'Day One', every week they can see their Network Leaders and how well they, as a chapter, are doing. It's just brilliant. What's even better is that the chapter has a good spread of Network Leaders; a sure sign that every member is playing their part in the success of the chapter.

If your chapter doesn't present your chapter figures, at least monthly, with the aid of great visuals you, as a member, are really missing out.

Every business must know its 'numbers' for real success and your BNI chapter is no different.

I look forward to visiting Bristol Cook again and I am positive that when I do it will be a massive success and a Flagship Chapter.

90 Day Challenge

It seems that wherever you turn there’s a new 90 Day Challenge being made. It’s all over Facebook and the leader of the pack seems to be ‘The Body by Vi Challenge’. The idea is that you set a goal, video it, and then ‘Go Public’ with it; on Facebook, Twitter, just about everywhere.

There’s nothing new in this idea, I have written blogs about making goals public and there’s even a chapter in my new book ‘The 10 YearBreakfast’ on the subject. But, being challenged by a friend, and making the goal public, really seems to have caught on.

So, how about this for an idea?

Challenge your best mate in your chapter to a goal: to bring a certain number of visitors to your chapter in the next 90 days, or a certain number of referrals. The bigger the challenge the better! Then make a video (including your chapter name of course) and go public with it.

I think this would be a great deal of fun and I’m sure you could think of a prize or two. Maybe if enough members in your chapter took part, all of the winners' names, could be put into a hat for a special prize from the chapter?

Maybe even a BNI Director would like to challenge a member or two!

Do you know, I’m pretty excited about this idea! What do you think?

Now who shall I pick…

Have you any idea?

Well it’s back to work with a bang this week and I guess most members will be attending their first meeting of the New Year.

Now with a new year come resolutions and new targets.  Chapter Leadership Teams may ask their fellow members what their plans for the year are.  They might have set goals for the chapter themselves and just let the members know these plans.  As a member you might have set your own targets.

Targets might include; the number of referrals you will give, the number of visitors you will bring to the meetings (not merely invite), the number of workshops you will attend, the number of 1-2-1s you will have, and the number of testimonials you will give.  One of my targets was to never be absent (always have a substitute).  And, of course, your Leadership Team might have a target for the amount of business passed in the chapter.

There are of course other targets you could set yourself, like taking the Education Slot three or four times a year.  Always being the first member to arrive (or at least not being the last).  Never giving anything less than a great 60 Seconds.

I promise you that if you take the time to think about what you will do for your chapter and fellow members (and you) over the coming year, it will make a big difference to your success.
But how about a starting point?  Have you any idea how many referrals you passed last year?  Or visitors you brought to your chapter?  Or workshops you attended?

If you don’t know, please find out, because it might surprise you.  And, in any case, it will give you a good starting point for this year.

I would love to know some of your targets.  So please let know.

Look at your numbers!

Every successful entrepreneur, in fact person in business, knows that knowing their numbers is a key component to their success.  And, as both a member and as a chapter, in BNI we are fortunate to be supplied with some great data (numbers); to name just two, our PALMS report and the Traffic Lights.

But, we have to be careful that we don’t become too ‘number’ led. What I mean is that thinking the PALMS report and the Traffic Lights are the only things that matter. BNI is a people business and we must always remember that.

Now I’m not suggesting for one moment that a member’s PALMS report and Traffic Light score shouldn’t be good; of course it should.  For one thing I believe that all members should be ‘Green’.  But, that’s not my point.

My point is that we shouldn’t just get caught up in the numbers; we must be careful that the numbers don’t become all-consuming.  The numbers should be the result of our actions.  In my opinion it’s far better to be in the green because you are a good member, than to be in the green because you are ‘encouraged’ to do the right things.  It’s a slight difference but, to my mind, a very important distinction.

In one of his books, Steve Jobs explains that he didn’t set out to be super-rich, he set out to change the world. He just got super-rich doing it.  And that’s what I think a BNI member should be like and encouraged to be like.  We should all want to be great members, because that’s how we benefit most from our membership.  And the result will be great PALMS data and ‘green’ in the Traffic Lights.

So, what do you want to change that will make a difference to your BNI membership?  It might not have the same effect that Steve Jobs did, but you might just find it improves your numbers.
